Teaching Philosophy

"Music is interior decoration." - Wayne Shorter

Even if music may not be the main thing in your life, I truly believe that playing music helps you become a better person. We learn so much about ourselves when we play, and the skills we develop aren't just for playing music - they are for problem solving and for communicating and for self-reflection.

Music should be meaningful - even if that meaning is just for fun. The good news is that the farther along you get into music, the more fun and meaningful it can be. There is joy to 'play'ing! I want students to improve, but first and foremost I will teach them how to love playing music.

Musical Education

THE MEAT AND POTATOES: I have acquired both a Music Diploma and a Bachelors in Music in Jazz Studies from Capilano University.

THE REAL STORY: I started playing saxophone in elementary school and enjoyed it enough to take lessons with a man named Malcolm Sings. I played in school bands and community bands until grade 12, where I decided to pursue music more seriously.

From there, I studied music at Capilano University, where I received education in a broad range of skills like Ear Training, Improvisation, History, Theory, Arranging, and of course playing the saxophone in ensembles and private lessons.

I learned what I know about the instrument from private lessons with Steve Kaldestad and Mike Allen, and about music from private lessons with Bill Coon. Bill Coon also taught me about how to arrange for bands, and Brad Turner was responsible for teaching me about jazz improvisation.

Nowadays, I am always learning from my private practice, my time on the bandstand, and my bigger adventures playing saxophone on Cruise Ships

Special Skills and Training

Okay, so I don't have any crazy musical quirks, but I am very experienced in working with people and creating a welcoming, safe space for the people around me! I have attended and ran summer camps for the last 5 summers, so I know how it feels to be anxious about meeting new people, and worried about hiding your imperfections from them. The experience I have bringing youths together in cabins directly translates to better communication with students, and my time spent planning and running camp programs means that I am no stranger to preparation. Don't worry, I am on your team!

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
