I believe music should be an enjoyable experience for both the listener and the performer. Knowing the struggles of keeping interest during lessons, I strive to keep lessons fun by adapting them to accommodate students' needs and learning styles. Every student is different, so part of the fun in teaching is finding out what works for them.
I am open to students learning music they want to play but at the same time making sure they keep up with music that challenges them technically so they keep improving.
My most recent academic accomplishment was a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia. I also hold a ARCT Diploma for Performers from the Royal Conservatory of Music. I am classically trained and have studied with notable pianists: Keiko Alexander and Amanda Chan.
In my leisure time I take private voice lessons with the soprano, Laura Widgett. Singing may be an even more personal experience compared to playing the piano; your instrument is your own body in singing! Therefore, one feels even more vulnerable singing in front of someone. Through these experiences, I strive to make sure my studio is a safe place for my students to practice and express themselves. There will never be any harsh judgement on whatever sound is being produced. If the student is up to it, I also provide some basic voice lessons which I believe will benefit ear training, sight singing and sight reading.
