Teaching Philosophy

Being a multilingual person that has given, for years, music lessons in 5 languages, I must confess that the best language that unifies persons from all over the world is music. You can express all of your feelings with music : your joy, your anger, your dreams and even your sufferings. A musical education, be it instrumental or theoretical, is necessary for all children since it increases the mathematical memory of the brain, the coordination of limbs and the concentration; it ensures as well that the child grows up psychologically healthy and happy.

Learning how to play an instrument is more than just playing notes and performing rythms...It gives you serenity, happiness and self-achievement feelings. As an experienced teacher, I always put forward all these qualities of music I stated above and help my students to get the utmost pleasure of the lessons.

Having taught to students from 5 years old to 70 years old, I adjust my methods to the age, the level and the learning motive of the student. I have a wide range of repertoire and I use books from different countries. I adopt a flexible and a different teaching program for each and every student following his/her possibilities of practicing, and his/her speed of learning and improvement.

And finally, I like to encourage my students in every occasion by making them discover their success. I believe that a good teacher is a teacher that provides all the necessary support and enthusiasm to the student, which will lead in turn to a big achievement in the subject learnt. Learning an instrument is like learning a language...The most universal language of the world...

Musical Education

I have started my piano education at 5 years old with my mother who was also a pianist. I have many musicians in my family; my grand-mother was also a piano teacher and my father a musicologist.

I have won the competition for entrance to the State Conservatory of Istanbul University at 7 years old where I have been given a strong technical basis, a sensitive key touch and high artistic qualities for 11 years. I have studied piano performance and interpretation with well-known teachers such as Ergican Saydam (Virtuoso and composer) and Professor Dr. Hülya Tarcan (Pianist and teacher from 'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris'). In addition to my piano courses, I have studied solfeggio, harmony, music theory, music and art history, musical terminology, forms in classical music according to historical eras, chamber music and choral studies with Professor Dr. Emel Çelebioğlu.

After the conservatory, I have continued my piano studies with Necla Tiner and Professor Dr. Hülya Tarcan for 5 years more and have reached the masters degree level of Istanbul University.

After I got my diploma, I have also attented to the 'masterclasses' given by Andrei Diev (famous Russian virtuoso and teacher from the State Conservatory of Moscow) and by Diana Anderson (President of EPTA -European Piano Teachers' Associatıon - and professor in the Conservatory of Brussels) who taught me the new 'Ecole Russe' and 'Ecole Belge' piano techniques.

The second musical training that I have and which opened a new way to my artistic and musical performance is about piano accompaniment and coaching for opera artists. I have studied opera styles, vocal and breathing techniques and 'chant lyrique' with Remziye Alper (worldwide famous primadonna of The State Opera and Ballet of Istanbul). This training led me to create a group - La Luce dell'Arte - formed by professional opera artists (two lyric sopranos, a dramatic soprano, a tenor and a baritone) with whom I have performed on stage for many years. I still give concerts with my group in well-known concert halls, associations, cultural centers and universities.

Special Skills and Training

I have attended to the training given by the Orff Institute of Mozarteum University which is in Salzburg, for which I have been given a certificate. This education was for preschool and primary school music and instrument teachers . I have also participated to the seminars given by ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of England) - an association constituted by the well-known music schools of England and whose 'Patron' is The Majesty Queen of England. ABRSM organizes examinations and gives certificates and diplomas to instrument and/or theory students in all the countries of the world. I have settled this new examination system in the music school, L'EFMI - L'Ecole Francophone de Musique d'Istanbul, where I have worked for long years; I have also re-scheduled all the courses so that the students may get prepared to these exams and have additional certificates, other than the ones that were already given by the school. I have given, for 30 years, and I still give private piano, solfeggio and theory lessons to children of all ages and also to adults. I have prepared my students for the conservatory entrance exams, for the conservatories' yearly level exams, for ABRSM and also for 'London College of Music' exams. I have worked as a piano and theory teacher at TRIO Music & Fine Arts School (for 3 years), in L'EFMI - L'Ecole Francophone de Musique d'Istanbul - (for 11 years); as a music teacher in St. Joseph High School, in College Galileo Galilei and in IMI The Italian High School. On the other hand, I have been the private assistant of Professor Dr. Hülya Tarcan from the State Conservatory of the Fine Arts University Mimar Sinan, for 7 years. I have prepared her piano students for the yearly level and final exams of the conservatory; I have made researches, and translations for the drafting of the final thesis of her master and doctoral students; I have also prepared them on the computer according to the academic format required by the university. Besides my teaching experience, I have been the school director of L'EFMI - L'Ecole Francophone de Musique d'Istanbul - for 8 years. In this context, I would like to precise that, in addition to my conservatory diploma, I also have a Bachelor of Science diploma in BME / Business, Management & Economics from SUNY - The State University of New York, an FLMI with Distinction diploma in Insurance Management and an ACS with Honors diploma in Customer Services from LOMA - Life Office Management Association Inc. / Atlanta. Finally, I would like to add my singing and theatrical skills and experience to my resume : I have been an active member of a theater group for which I have composed children songs, made musical arrangements and played in theater works; I have performed on stage as well in the festival of Athens.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
