Teaching Philosophy

I come from a musical family that has instilled in me a lifelong love of music that I have carried with me all my life. I am a professional opera singer and also music teacher for the last 9 years. I have experience teaching piano and singing from ages 4 yrs to 75! I have experience with the earliest beginners to those that want to pursue music on a university level or beyond!

I love connecting with my students on a personal level to understand what their goals are and how best to help them achieve them. There is nothing more rewarding to me than to be able to pass on my musical training and watch my students succeed!

My teaching philosophy is based on the foremost love of music and having fun expressing! I believe that a solid technique gives us tools to be able to express fully. Therefore my lessons are structured in a way that includes: a physical warm up, technical exercises which will build fundamental blocks and singing/playing songs! All in a very positive and warm environment.

Musical Education

Education:
I have an Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) specializing in opera performance. I also hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Western Ontario (London), specializing in vocal performance. I believe that the study of music is a lifelong process and continue studying with my teacher, soprano Christiane Riel independently to always be working on my craft! I also was a Young Artist with the Vancouver Opera for their 2019-2020 season and therefore have a lot of experience with performing!

RCM:
I have a grade 9 level in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music and have been teaching piano for 9 years! My teachers have included Dr. Evgeny Chugunov at Lakehead University.

Special Skills and Training

As a working, professional opera singer I have been worked with and have learned from many professional musicians , all expertise I share with my students! I also have first hand experience with performance in front of an audience and ways to handle nerves and preparation-- I hope to share these skills with my students! As an opera singer I have attended many international training programs including SongFest (Los Angeles), Opera NUOVA (Edmonton), Halifax Summer Opera Festival (Halifax), La Musica Lirica (Italy) and am always learning! I have a grade 9 RCM certificate in piano and voice and enjoy teaching different styles of piano and voice

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
