Teaching Philosophy

Music has been my dominant form of creative expression for my entire life. It has also been a fundamental part of my education and always provided a healthy challenge throughout my developmental years, which I believe better equipped me for my traditional education and sharpened my abilities for focus, commitment and responsibility. My goal is to share both the flexible, expressive and creative side of music, as well as equip my students with a well-rounded, traditional and structured understanding of music studies. This philosophy supports the students ability to play and understand their favourite songs from radio, tv or movies, and be able to jam with friends, while also having the training to tackle complex pieces and see consistent progress. As a teacher, it has been my passion and absolute pleasure to share the gift of music!

Musical Education

I was enrolled in private piano lessons from the ages of 5-18 before beginning my own teaching career.

My qualifications are an extensive education through the Royal Conservatory of Music including:

• 8 practical piano exam certificates awarded by RCM with an average of “First Class Honours”.
• Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced music theory certificates from RCM all awarded “First Class Honours with Distinction”.
• 5+ years teaching experience.

Awards and Distinctions

• RCM “First Class Honours” practical piano certificates.
• RCM “First Class Honours with Distinction” advanced theory certificate.

Special Skills and Training

As listed under my education, I have spent many years developing my skills in sight reading, ear training and music theory and am confident in my ability to teach it. That being said, the practical application of these skills is very important to me, so I have also spent a lot of time playing and singing my favourite songs, composing my own songs and transferring my skills to guitar, ukulele, flute and vocals. Because of this, I can offer unique insight to my students on how what they are learning can give them the freedom and independence to learn and play whatever they want across multiple genres and instruments. I also specialize in teaching students with specific needs i.e., autism, muteness etc. and am fluent in American Sign Language if your child is more comfortable expressing themselves that way. As well, I have received specific training to be successful teaching music online.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
