As a music educator, my goals are to inspire and create passion for music amongst my students, along with creativity for the arts, freedom of expression, and a strong disciplined mind. Music fosters many of those traits purely on its own, but may need an additional outer force to gently nudge them, or provide them with the confidence so that they may achieve their goals with more determination.
Each student is unique in their own ways, whether it be strengths or weaknesses. I do not believe that having a set formula to teach or following a rigid lesson plan may work for each and every learner. Instead, I strive to be student-oriented and open minded to what each student would like to achieve. As an educator, creating a safe, and comfortable environment is key when learning a new skill.
I began playing piano at age 7 and as I got older, developed great passion for musical performance, with the sole focus on piano.
I obtained my ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), whilst also achieving the highest mark in my district in 2012. During my formative years up to attaining my Diploma, I studied under Xuan Wu and Anna Levy, who both greatly inspired me to take my musical endeavours further. I then auditioned for music school to pursue higher education, and become a professionally trained musician.
I achieved my BMus from the University of British Columbia (UBC) studying under Professor Mark Anderson, chair of the keyboard division. The warm, delicate tones he produced on the keyboard along with beautiful metaphors that connected art, and music together affected my views significantly in terms of how I connected with music. This inspired me to extend my studies to involve a focus on music education in hopes to become a music teacher in the public school system, motivating, and promoting the importance of music learning in youths.
