Teaching Philosophy

As a music educator, my enthusiasm and passion for music and learning are boundless, earning me the affectionate nickname of the musical Miss Frizzle. With a love for clever puns, I inject humor into the studio, fostering an environment that is both enjoyable and approachable.

In my teaching philosophy, the "we" mentality takes center stage, as I firmly believe that together, we can help students unlock their full potential. Creating a safe and welcoming space, I encourage students to explore, experiment, and grow in their musical journey.

Music is an inherent part of humanity, a shared experience that connects us all. I hold the belief that every student has the capacity to learn and embrace music—it's all about discovering the unique path that resonates with them.

I hold a Bachelors of Music in Piano Performance from the prestigious University of Tulsa and a Master of Arts in Music and Culture from Carleton University. My musical journey began at the tender age of 4, starting my piano instruction and progressing through the RCM program up to level 10 before graduating high school. I then ventured to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to pursue my music studies at the university level.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I had the privilege of studying under the esteemed guidance of Professor Stuart Deaver, whose lineage traces back to the renowned Portuguese pianist Sequeria Costa and, ultimately, to the classical virtuoso Franz Liszt. Under his mentorship, I flourished as a performer, engaging in numerous exciting musical ventures.

I had the honor of performing on-air with a local news channel to promote the inauguration of a new performance building on campus. Additionally, I held my own captivating solo recitals, participated in a captivating piano quartet chamber ensemble, and showcased my vocal talents in the TU Choir and TU Capella Chamber, where we delivered professional performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Verdi's Requiem.

Furthermore, I expanded my musical horizons by taking vocal lessons and participating in masterclasses conducted by distinguished pianists Daniel Cuhna in 2010 and William DeVan in 2011.

Special Skills and Training

Music has been an integral part of my life from a young age, as my mother taught piano from our home. This early exposure allowed me to gain valuable teaching experience at a young age, as I observed and discovered various teaching techniques while sitting in on lessons. Growing up in both Canada and the United States, my education and teaching experiences have exposed me to diverse methodologies and resources for effective instruction. While I primarily teach in English, I am also familiar with some French and German, with the latter being a language I am currently studying. As part of my training for my masters, I had the opportunity to work with individuals with learning disabilities and/or on the autism spectrum, an experience that continues to inform and enrich my teaching approach to this day. Aside from teaching, I have honed my skills as an accomplished accompanist during my studies, collaborating with choirs, vocal students, and instrumentalists.

There is a one-time registration fee of 25 $ charged with the first lessons. All Taxes are included in prices, if applicable

Policies


1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
