Teaching Philosophy

I believe playing music is a skill for life. My philosophy is that I wish to give you the skills that you need, while you study with me, to allow you to enjoy playing music for life. I want to make the learning process enjoyable for all of my students. To do so, I will create a personally tailored program that is just for you, your aptitude, and your goals.

Musical Education

I have my ARCT piano teacher diploma. I studied under various piano and voice teachers in Kelowna BC and Calgary AB over the years. I also had certification as a Kindermusik teacher while I ran the program in Calgary for several years. I continue to upgrade my education with teacher webinars, and workshops.

Special Skills and Training

I was born and raised in Kelowna, BC and took all my initial music training there. It was also there that I began student teaching at a young age while completing my music studies with various teachers including Dale Wentworth and Roslyn Frantz. I received the ARCT piano teacher’s diploma from the Royal Conservatory of music in 1989. After this I moved to Calgary and had my own music teaching business for 19 years and became a member of the Alberta Piano Teacher’s Association and the Alberta Registered Music Teacher’s Association. I have continued to upgrade my knowledge with various workshops and music teacher’s conferences. During my time in Calgary I also took a further interest in vocal studies and studied under Betty Hicks. I made use of this vocal training when I started another business and became a licensed Kindermusik educator; an early childhood music and movement program which gives preschool age children a head start on musicianship. I then served the Burnaby, BC area for 11 years as a mobile music teacher. At the same time I was a member of the BC Registered Music Association. With the Pandemic, I moved back to my hometown of Kelowna, BC and never missed a beat with my students as we switched the entire studio online. I've learned some great teaching tricks during this time and have grown to love online teaching. Many of my students have actually done BETTER online than they did in person. Wanting to keep this momentum going, I would love to add new students to this online approach. However, if you live in Kelowna, in person lessons are a possibility in the future.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
