Teaching Philosophy

Having experienced music both as a musician and a teacher, I have come to appreciate the profound beauty of this art form, which possesses two distinct characteristics that make it truly exceptional to teach and learn. These qualities are universality and individuality.

The universality of music is what makes it so inclusive and accessible to everyone. Whether one listens to music, plays an instrument, or engages with music through technology, it finds its way into the lives of all individuals. Music is a universal language that transcends cultural, geographical, and linguistic boundaries, bringing people together through shared emotions and experiences.

On the other hand, music's individuality lies in the unique way each person interacts with it and the role it plays in their life. It encompasses musical preferences, learning abilities, talents, and individual styles. Recognizing and embracing this individuality is key to nurturing each student's growth as a musician. By encouraging students to discover their musical identity and find their place within the world of music, we empower them to develop a lifelong passion for the art and cultivate a deeply valuable skillset.

Musical Education

Over the past 14 years, I have devoted myself to the study of piano under the guidance of a private teacher. This journey has led me to successfully complete several RCM practical examinations up to Level 10, along with corequisite music theory, history, harmony, and counterpoint examinations. Currently, I am enthusiastically working towards achieving my ARCT Diploma, a significant milestone in my musical career.

Alongside my dedication to the piano, I embarked on a 7-year journey of studying the cello. Two of those years were spent under the expert tutelage of the highly accomplished cellist, Ian Hampton.

Special Skills and Training

Apart from my extensive music studies and education, my involvement in the community has been marked by active musical engagement. I've been privileged to showcase my talents as both a pianist and cellist at weddings and funerals, adding a heartfelt touch to these meaningful events. For over 6 years, I had the honor of serving as an accompanist in my church, as well as other churches, lending my musical expertise to enhance worship experiences. Additionally, I collaborated with choirs, organists, and small instrumental ensembles for diverse events, including fundraisers, concerts, and recitals. My passion for piano performance has been nurtured over 13 years, and I have had the pleasure of captivating audiences both as a soloist and in enchanting duets. Teaching piano has been an immensely gratifying part of my musical journey, spanning 6 years. My commitment to growth led me to work alongside an experienced teacher for 6 months early in my career, laying the foundation for my teaching approach. Since then, I have had the joy of guiding over 40 different students, shaping my unique teaching methods and philosophy. RCM Certifications: Practical Piano Levels 1-10 (Examinations for levels 6,8,9,10) Theory: Intermediate (Level 7), Advanced (Level 8) Harmony: Levels 9, 10, ARCT History: Levels 9, 10

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
