Teaching Philosophy

I have always enjoyed playing music both as a hobby and professionally. This enjoyment was brought about by being in the hands of great professors who taught me not only how to make good music but also how to appreciate each note and cherish every moment that I spend with my instrument. This rich and pleasant educational experience forms the foundation of my teaching philosophy.

I believe that a piano student should enjoy their lessons to have a meaningful musical experience. This is why I always include pieces which are of interest to the student. However, I also believe in the importance of developing a solid technique which is why the study of music theory, note reading, and classical works are an integral part of my pedagogy. I believe that a balance between fun and development is crucial in making the piano lesson experience worthwhile.

Every student and every lesson is unique and I personalize every aspect of the lesson to suit the needs and goals of the students. I put great attention into making sure that the student finishes their lesson with a sense of accomplishment and eagerness to work harder for their next lesson and their next piece. This could not be achieved through a one-size-fits-all pedagogy. That is why I champion for personalized lesson specifically designed for the individual student.

I have had the pleasure of receiving excellent musical training from the best and the brightest in the industry. It is now my time to pass on what I have learned and I make it my responsibility to give all my students a rich, fun, and worthwhile musical learning experience that will contribute to their growth and success.

Musical Education

I have a Bachelor of Music in Piano degree from St. Scholastica's College in Manila where I received classical training from one of the Philippines' most respected concert pianist and pedagogue, Prof. J. Greg Zuniega. I am currently taking a Bachelor of Education in Music Education at McGill University.
I was trained in all aspects of classical music performance and received excellent guidance in piano pedagogy from multiple professors throughout the course of my study. My music education training is now being taken to the next level at McGill University where we are taught by industry pioneers in music education.

Special Skills and Training

I started my musical journey by studying classical pieces on my own. Once my talent has been recognized, I had the opportunity to attend private lessons from one of the students of Philippines' National Artist for Music, Ms. Lucresia Kasilag. This opened a lot of performing opportunities and scholarships for me when I entered college. Furthermore, I had the unique opportunity of working closely with my professors in their piano studios where I had the chance to teach and be taught how to improve my teaching. My classical conservatory training served as the foundation for my professional career as a cruise ship musician where I worked with world-class musicians in the cruising industry while travelling the world. After the pandemic hit us in 2020, I worked as an online piano instructor for students in Qatar. I have been privileged to experience being a student, a professional performer, and a teacher. In having these experiences, I have enriched my piano teaching philosophy and I can't wait to bring in all of my experiences and share it to my students in their lesson.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
