To me, music is an extension of excitement. Whether you are an avid listener discovering your new favourite artist of the week, to fiddling around on your dad's guitar from 1985, to writing your own love ballad and wailing on the keys. There is always a new feeling, a new genre or a new idea you can discover with music. The world of creativity, expression and freedom that comes from music is exhilarating, and something that is better experienced with others. My job is to help be your compass and help guide you to find your own musical excitement, much like others have done for me.
I studied voice at Grant MacEwan University for 3 years and received two diplomas:
- A Vocal Major Comprehensive Diploma and a
Vocal Major Bachelor of Music Performance Diploma Exit.
My skills acquired include: The ability to write music, perform various genres and styles (such as Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk, Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Folk etc), the understanding of extensive music theory, ability to transcribe music, extensive ear-training, and completing intermediate training on piano.
I have also been playing guitar for over 10 years, applying my knowledge of theory, composition and self accompaniment during live vocal performances.
2013 Prince Albert Search for the Stars Songwriter of the Year Award.
2017 KWC (Karaoke World Championships) Top 8 in Canadian Nationals.
2019 Full debut album: Kyle Morris - With Life You'll Never Know (available on all streaming platforms).
One of my main passions is to perform live, and as such the skills I've gained from that go hand in hand with my teachings. For voice in particular, I like to focus on the overall control of your voice. Giving you the tools necessary to sing the way you want, and in turn, discover your own sound. My approach for learning, regardless of instrument, is always hands on and practical. For me growing up, I knew little to no music theory, so when I decided to go to university, I felt like I gained a unique perspective on how to process all of the information that goes into understanding music. I take my time and try to relate the foundations of music in digestible bites so that it does not seem overwhelming or complicated. For example learning how to play piano in university helped better my understanding of playing guitar and made me a better musician.
