Teaching Philosophy

Music is the language of the soul. The fact that combinations of sounds are able to evoke emotion is the main reason music facsinates me. To me, music speaks louder than words. I want to help my students find their own 'voice'. This is why I believe teaching playing techniques and theory are more valuable than songs. It is like finding your own voice instead of copying someone else. I can teach you songs, but I like to teach my students the building blocks of music so any song can become easy to learn.

Musical Education

I have studied and graduated from Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production with a Diploma in Performance and Music Technology (2013-2015).
-My program encompassed a complete range of industry knowledge to prepare artists on a professional level. In my two-year program at Metalworks we studied playing live with other instruments, 1-on-1 lessons with multiple professional artists, proper techniques and etiquette for recording and performing in a music studio and live venue, musical theory and history, musical production and engineering, the physics of sound (how to build a sound treated studio), and soundtracking & sound effects for film and TV.

In addition to Metalworks, I have also graduated from Berklee College of Music's 5-week summer program and 1-week guitar program.
-The 5-week program in 2012 was an amalgamation of their college level performance program condensed into a 5-week summer course. Here we focused on musicianship, theory, receiving private 1-on-1 lessons with professional artists, and performing venues in a band with other students playing different instruments.
-The 1-week program in 2011 offered aspects for improving a guitarist in musical theory, playing techniques, performing in an ensemble (band), and attending guitar clinics from visiting professional artists.

Prior to my college level music education I also received private lessons from 2007 to 2012 with the current guitarist of the band Helix. This was where I spent my Friday afternoons after school from grade 7 up to grade 12.

Awards and Distinctions

-Spinnin’ Records Remix Contest – Charting: 57th for Touch (Taylor Hoy Remix) [2016].
-OSSD George Pollard Music Scholarship - for the student showing outstanding leadership and participation in music and academics [2012].

Special Skills and Training

A great skill I have is recording and producing using digital audio production software. I can offer guidance on how to record instruments (and digital instruments / MIDI), make songs & electronic beats, as well as teach how to mix your own songs. I am adept at using the following recording programs; Cubase, Logic X (and GarageBand), Ableton, and Pro Tools.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
