Teaching Philosophy

The body is a naturally rhythmic, and I believe in making music learning accessible and fun. The key to my philosophy is understanding the unique ways the voice and body can be used embody a rhythm. Whether it is understanding the multitude of rhythms on a drumkit, djembe, tabla, conga or even beatbox, my training allows students to traverse with ease across a multitude of percussive instruments.

Making lessons fun and engaging, I work with students to bring their rhythm to the next level. Catering to an individual's unique style and music preference, my lessons allow for growth in students ability to read, perform and improvise in their given musical genre. Teaching the cultural significance behind world rhythms is also a part of my practice, to allow for students to understand the context behind a beat.

Rhythm is universal and all musicians can grow from understanding the exciting world of drums!

Musical Education

I have a BFA in Music from Simon Fraser University. I was trained in Drum Kit since the age of eighteen. I went on to study world drumming which lead to African Drumming. In 2005 I took an extensive study travel to Ghana W. Africa to study their traditional drumming techniques at the University of Ghana. My training includes four years of studying tabla under Sanjay Varma, a pupil of the Punjabi school trained under Ustad Zakir Hussain. I am currently completing my Masters in Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.

Special Skills and Training

Having the chance to perform on stages such as the Drake Hotel, Sony Centre and many stages across Canada, has given me the unique experience to share music as a student and touring performer. Having taught drum workshops at festivals and non-profit organizations, I have a background in teaching large groups and individuals. With about 20 world drums at my home studio, I have built a reputation as a go-to artist in the city for percussion and recording. With experience as a producer, I can help students translate their drumming dreams into recorded music. With composition and production as some my supplementary training, I have been able to teach numerous students of taking of their skills into the studio.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
