Teaching Philosophy

“Those who wish to sing always find a song,” (Swedish Proverb).

Singing is a deeply personal experience and an expression of the true self. Likewise, learning how to sing with ease and skill is a journey unique to the individual; No two voices are the same and no two paths to vocal freedom are the same either. In my voice studio the doors are open to singers of all ages and stages of development. I strive to reach each singer, by tailoring my language, energy, and methods to the learning style, goals, and personality of the student. My main objective is to provide my students with the tools and confidence to express their authentic voices and artistic inclinations, uninhibited by psychological, physical, or emotional restraints.

To provide the best learning experience, my programming focuses on playful exploration and providing my students with a solid technical foundation substantiated in scientific, anatomical, and acoustical facts. It is important to me that my singers receive a well-rounded vocal and musical education, so that they are prepared to be independent artists and problem-solvers; therefore, learning plans will encompass general musicianship (rhythm, pitch, intervals, ear training), lyric diction, text analysis, performance and acting craft, as well as body-mapping, alignment, and physical awareness activities. My approach to singing technique is to help the student properly coordinate the dynamic balance between tension and release, so that they can sing with ease. In order to achieve vocal ease, I prioritize techniques for proper breath control and activities to help release and rebalance muscular tensions.

Learning is an ongoing pursuit, which certainly rings true in the field of music. To prepare the student for the world of the arts, I work to instill the values of independence, curiosity, and work-ethic in my students. As learning to sing, at times, can be a slow and complicated, I try to create an environment that is engaging for the student and inspires them to be inquisitive and opening to trying new things. As artists, it is important to develop a comfort in exploring the unknown and to never back down from challenge. Personal strength and determination are mental attributes that I motivate my students to attain through accepting and embracing failure, and by encouraging them to look at solving difficulties through a positive lens. Singing is not always easy, but it certainly can be extremely rewarding and fun if the challenge is, approached with positivity, openness, and passion!

I believe everybody has a right sing and that each person has their own unique sound and song to express and share. I also believe that it is my responsibility as a teacher to take each student seriously and to help them work through the many challenges that they may face whilst learning the craft of music. My ultimate goal is to provide each student with the tools and qualities necessary to communicate their human experience through song.

Musical Education

VOICE:
I have a Master’s in Voice Literature and Performance and an Honour’s Bachelor in Voice Performance, both from Western University. During my studies at Western I took teaching and pedagogy courses, including the doctoral level Voice Pedagogy course.

I also received training at Vancouver Opera in their Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program and I completed Tapestry Opera’s Emerging Artist workshop for contemporary classical music.

I am always learning and refining my craft. I still take voice lessons and coach with esteemed artists. I have had the immense privilege to learn from many fantastic artists in the business including, Jonathan Darlington, Simone Luti, Dr. Sophie Roland, Les Dala, Rosemary Thomson, Judi Forst, among others.

PIANO:
I studied classical piano during my youth and I followed the Royal Conservatory of Music system. I have Grade 9 Practical Piano and I completed the History and Harmony examinations as well.

Experience has been my greatest teacher for both Voice and Piano. I worked in various positions as Music Director, Choir director and choir accompanist for the United Church of Canada, where I learned important skills as a pianist. Voice is my primary instrument and I am grateful to have an active performance career. I have had many wonderful opportunities to learn about my craft on stage, at organizations including Vancouver Opera, Les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, Tapestry Opera, Théâtre Lyrichorégra 20, Magisterra Soloists, Kingston Symphony Orchestra, etc.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
