Teaching Philosophy

I love helping singers to discover their voice at any age and to develop confidence in their own instrument. I believe that through healthy vocal training and proper direction, a student may be able to create a dynamic and expressive instrument within themselves. I believe that the voice body connection is imperative to address when working with singers. Lessons will include physical and vocal warm ups and stretches to start. Vocal exercises and studies are important for technical training and musicality. I am open to a wide range of repertoire with the understanding that a healthy vocal approach is necessary always and regardless of the vocal style.
I love working within a variety of musical styles and welcome students to bring in material that inspires them. That is always a good way to start!

Musical Education

I have my BFA in Voice Performance from Capilano University in North Vancouver and University of Regina. I am currently finishing my Masters Degree in Vocal Pedagogy through the University of Wales, distance learning. I have certifications in various voice training programs in New York in singing and speech work.

Special Skills and Training

I started my musical training in a concert and marching band as a flautist. I studied for 10 years before heading off to university to study voice. I loved my training and have spent many years as a teacher and performer. My minor in university was in drama and I have acted in a variety of musicals and plays. I have continuously kept up with my studies, working with voice pedagogues in the United States and Canada. I have my 200 hour yoga teachers training certificate which has given me greater insight into anatomy and body voice connection and have taken courses on how to work with preschool and special needs children in a yoga class setting. In addition to teaching voice privately, I have taught musical theatre and drama classes for over 20 years. I have been an adjudicator in many musical festivals as well. I am well versed in many vocal styles and have had students that have gone on to have professional careers of their own. In my spare time, I have taught pre school level classes all the way up to adult lessons. I thrive on being versatile and learning new things. My Masters studies in vocal pedagogy have allowed me to further my understanding of the voice, and has offered me the opportunity to become an even more knowledgeable, supportive and capable teacher. I sing in a couple of different show bands and continue to act in plays and when I have the time.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
