Music is ultimately a universal language anyone can learn. You can discern different ideas and different ways of expressing them just by hearing them from those who play or sing. It’s not any simple task to find a way to express yourself through music, let alone do that to an audience. I find that musical education is a great way to sharpen those developmental skills. Just as one would learn how to read, write, speak and understand a language, one may also learn their instrument in a similar fashion: how to sight read music, how to write music idiomatic to an instrument, how to play the instrument, and how to understand where their instrument fits in the music. Regardless of passion or interest, I aim to develop and nurture those skills, whether it be in the interest of music, or in the interest of general growth.
I am a current student at Capilano University, expecting to finish my BA in Fine Arts in Jazz Performance and Composition by Spring 2023.
I started playing the trumpet at twelve years old, only beginning to dig into more serious practice and study by sixteen. Over the duration of studies, I have delved into many musical styles, whether it be in the classroom, in the studio or on a gig. My playing experience ranges across classical training in private, small and large jazz ensembles (combos and big bands), playing as a horn section member in pop/classic rock cover bands, as a trumpeter for a four-piece alternative rock band, freelance studio work, and as a bandleader of my own jazz group, with arrangements and compositions written by myself. Some notable groups I have had the pleasure of being a part of include: The Happiest Big Band on Earth, the Capilano University A Band, and the Bruce James Orchestra.
