Teaching Philosophy

Music is fundamental to my being, and I believe that it is integral to the education of any person. We all have rhythm and sound as a core part of our body, from the heartbeat to the sound of breath, and formal training in music is only an expansion of what already exists in every person. The body of a musician requires as much detailed physical analysis and focus as that of an elite athlete; all of my lessons begin with physical warm-ups to support the specific musculature required in the development of each instrument.

Joy and play are essential elements of successful learning at any age, and I make certain that students learn without a lot of undue stress and anxiety. Adult students can expect the same support and respect as the youngest child. Without joy, there is no music, and without music, there is no joy.

Overall, teaching is my motivation in life. It is how I give back to the people. The one thing that motivates me as a teacher is the fact that the joy from working with children and seeing happy parents makes the entire experience so much more enjoyable. I love making students laugh and creating a fun way to teach the music curriculum. It brings life to my days when I see people around me full of joy... especially when it was me who made them smile. I love bringing hope and the joy of accomplishment to the people around me. When the kids accomplished something that's labeled as challenging, they tend to jump with joy or act like an accomplished superhero... and I live for it. I also love seeing adult students get filled with joy when they learned to play their favorite song or accomplish making their dreams come true. As you can see, there are many things that brings me motivation and joy as a teacher. I hope this inspires you as you read this message. If you have heard of Mel Robbins, you may like my method of teaching and motivating students. I have this 1 secret way to get anyone regardless of circumstances, to get started in their practice daily. I hope you consider me for your team as I will bring much value to you and help many of your students thrive. Thank you.

Musical Education

I have attended the following schools earning the following degrees:
- Yale - Music Theory Certificate
- Berklee College of Music - Music and Wellness
- York University - Bachelor of Music
- Royal Conservatory of Music - ARCT Diploma

I have studied piano since the age of 5 and played piano since the age of 3. I have learned how to play piano, recorder, xylophone, ukulele, voice, clarinet, guzheng, guitar, and many other instruments throughout my youth. I have joined the YUGC in college, Piano club, and many other music clubs on my campus at York University. During the pandemic, I attended school online and learned music from Berklee College of music, Harvard, and Yale. In addition, I have taken some courses online and received certifications for Sound Trap and Eric Whitacre's Virtual School. I have also completed my ARCT in piano through the Royal Conservatory. In addition, I have composed music since the age of 7 and my music can be found on Bandcamp.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
