In my eyes, music is the language through which we express love, compassion, humanity, and inwardness. To learn to express oneself through music is to explore the inner depths of one’s soul and present it in the most intimate and vulnerable manner. I believe that every student is capable of finding their voice and using it to share what is most important to them. As a teacher, my goal is not just to teach my students how to play their instrument; my goal is to help them remove the barriers that are standing in the way of them being able to express their most authentic version of themselves.
I have a Bachelor of Music Degree with Honours from Humber College, which included education in performance, arranging, band leading, and music production.
I began classical piano and music theory lessons from age five until age ten, taking a brief two-year hiatus from music before returning as a trumpet player at age 12. I soon immersed myself in nearly every musical opportunity I could find, playing in the concert bands, chamber ensembles, and jazz bands at school from grades 7-12 as well as an extra-curricular youth big band in high school. During this time, I studied with multiple trumpet teachers, including the founder and director of the Calgary Jazz Orchestra and the principal trumpet player for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. In preparation for college, I resumed studies with my former piano teacher to complete my RCM level 8 in music theory. During college, I gained plenty of experience as both a performing and studio musician, spending over 100 hours in the Gordon Wragg recording studio as well as performing at the Canadian Opera Company and touring southern Ontario with the Toronto All-Star Big Band.

As both a freelance musician and an arranger, I have worked in nearly every genre of music including folk, rock, RnB, brass bands, salsa music, Ukrainian folk music, Ethiopian afro-beat, and much more. What I have taken from these experiences is that any instrument can fit into any context if there is enough understanding and passion. As a teacher, I want to change the idea that taking music lessons means boring students to death with scale drills and antiquated etudes. I will assign exercises that incorporate each student's musical interest into their studies, be it a Louis Armstrong solo, a Van Halen riff, or a Dua Lipa melody. I want to discover what kind of music it is that will inspire my students to practise their instruments and ignite their flame!
