I can't recall a time I wasn't studying music. Whether formally in school, or casually for my own enjoyment - music has become a lifelong endeavor. The deeper our understanding of music, the more profound the enjoyment. Music has never existed in a vacuum - I feel passionately about connecting music to the history and people it was created for and by.
Music is meant to be shared - with an audience and with other musicians. I believe it is vital that what we achieve together in our lessons has a real-world application . I make it a priority to use my experience as a gigging musician to prioritize opportunities for student performance.
I have an honours BA in music from Humber College, where I majored in saxophone.
I have studied classical piano and theory from a young age, and earned my RCM certificates for Grade 8 performance and Grade 2 rudiments. At Humber, I studied under the country's finest woodwind performers like, Mark Promane, Andy Ballantyne , and Pat Labarbera. Under their guidance, I focused primarily on jazz improvisation and developing my technique and sound on the saxophone - skills that have granted me a career as a professional performing/recording musician. I have performed on stages throughout Canada and Europe - playing along Juno-winning artists such as Colin James, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar, and BROS.
2018 Juno nomination Global Music Album of the Year: "La Migra" - The Battle of Santiago [saxophones]
2019 - Juno nomination Blues Album of the Year: "Run To Me" - Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar [saxophone/horn arrangements]
2021 - Juno nomination Blues Album of the Year: "The Reckless One" - Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar [saxophone/piano/horn arrangements]
I have spent the last 10 years working as a professional performing and recording musician. My work has taken me across the world performing with countless artist, ensembles, and bands. These experiences have enriched my musical skills and understanding in a variety of genres from rock, pop, and soul - to jazz, funk, and world folk. I'm lucky to have balanced my performing life with a career in education. Working as a supply teacher for the Toronto District School Board - both in-class and virtually - has kept me adaptable to all kinds of learning environments.
