As a music teacher I aim to:
- nurture and instill a love and appreciation of music to all my students.
- make lessons as fun, tailored to the individual and enjoyable as possible!
I craft lessons to student’s strengths and personal goals, whilst ensuring that they meet RCM or ABRSM attainment goals for their age (for children) and experience. I myself thrive on variety and can get bored easily (!) so I try to make lessons as varied as possible, using interactive games, videos, backing tracks and making sure that the turnaround on pieces isn’t too long, regularly checking in with students on their thoughts towards what they are working on.
I understand that not every student has an ambition to become a professional musician, but I try to release their full musical potential and support and encourage them towards their goals, whatever they may be.
I have loved music for as long as I can remember and began to learn the recorder aged 3. I played in various bands and orchestras with Leicestershire Arts in Education, often with leading positions throughout primary and secondary school where I gained grade VIII (ABRSM) in both the flute, under Russell Parry from whom I learned much about musical voice and expression and violin, under Stuart Johnson, who was rigorous about technique. Aged 16, I was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music for 2 years, with a principal study of composition under Dr. Jeremy Pike, secondary studies in flute, violin and piano, and was awarded my piano diploma with the London College of Music, under the direction of Russian pianist Hazel Fanning- giving me my direct teaching pedigree down to Mozart. I also joined the acclaimed Chetham's Chamber Choir under the baton of Dr. Martin Bussey. Following Chetham's, I was accepted unconditionally into the London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama to read composition under Professors Malcolm Singer and Richard Baker.
I was immersed in music from an early age, always singing, being sung to, or listening to and gaining an appreciation for classical music every day in the car on the way to school. My mother is a violin teacher, and father a talented guitarist and songwriter, so I was always recording, improvising, and making music at home, which only increased when I was lucky enough to win a karaoke machine which furthered my interest in music production. My mother was deliberate about getting me into schools with excellent music departments so I was able to take part in extra curricular music activities all the time, and had a great circle of musical friends. Since graduating, I have gained a wealth of experience in wide ranging areas of music: conducting choirs, leading bands, extensive music production, arranging, composing for film, transcription and vocal recording.
