Teaching Philosophy

Music is a subject that I believe is essential to all. The beauty of music is that it is something that can be constantly improved upon and you can still learn and be inspired through pieces that you have learned in the past. Moreover, music makes us human and allows us to express our feelings and our dreams.

I remembered when I was learning piano in Qatar Music Academy and I had immense anxiety because I worried about playing the wrong notes or the wrong rhythm. My teachers constantly reminded me to not worry too much about making mistakes, but to live in the musical moment and enjoy it. I carry this teaching with my students and remind them to have fun.

Music is also collaborative and I enjoy playing along with my students together in the learning process, rather than giving instructions to them from a distance. I feel that I can also learn interesting musical things from my students that I have not thought of before.

Musical Education

I studied piano since I was 7 years old. I continued pursuing piano when my family moved from Malaysia to Qatar when I was 9 years old. I joined Qatar Music Academy when I was 13 years old and I continued to dive into piano performance with a Canadian teacher and followed by a Turkish teacher who studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for his Doctorate in piano performance. The two teachers in Qatar introduced me to different styles and genres yet having high standards and attention to details in classical music. I studied and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Music from Trinity Western University in April 2022. During my years studying at Trinity Western University, I participated in masterclasses with Douglas Finch and Charles-Richard Hamelin in 2020, and Cheng Cheng Zhao in 2022.

Awards and Distinctions

Diploma in Piano Performance- 2017
Certificate of Excellence from Qatar Music Academy-2018

Special Skills and Training

I studied under the ABRSM syllabus with all my piano teachers since I was 7 years old. The highest level I achieved so far is the Diploma in Performance in Piano. The syllabus has taught me the theoretical and the artistry of music. I also joined choirs in high school and in university which opened much more possibilities for musical expression in singing and piano playing. I learned to be more expressive and confident with my performances through choir and most importantly, I realized that the best way to learn is by doing something together.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
