I believe music is inherent to everyone, I have never met someone who hasn't had a single connection to music whether it's through playing an instrument or an appreciation of sound. I follow a student first approach in my teaching, focusing on the experience of learning being a joyful one!
I find hands-on learning to be the most important, and in my lessons try to incorporate a variety of musical skills as well as developing an appreciation for individual talents and preferences in music. This also includes wellness skills such as stretching, warmups, and self-care. Learning a new instrument can sometimes be a stressful experience both physically and mentally if special care isn't taken to listen to our bodies while we learn.
From the youngest musicians starting out their musical journey to older students looking to develop their sound I am constantly listening to what my students expect from their lessons and hope to provide quality and fun skill development.
I have studied both trumpet and piano, and a variety of musical skills from the age of ten both in public school and private lesson settings and am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Manitoba. During the summer I take part in music training for 6-9 weeks in different locations across Canada (mainly British Columbia and Halifax). I also have an extensive background in early childhood education and child development focused on ages 13 and under. This has included hands on teaching experience in classroom and private lesson settings, as well as research and theoretical learning about different approaches to teaching.

As a student myself, I have had the opportunity to observe many different styles of teaching such as Suzuki, Orff, RCM, and more. I like to incorporate parts of these philosophies and instructional techniques in my lessons depending on the needs of the student. I also have extensive experience in childcare and early childhood educational centres which has given me a great appreciation and understanding for learning through play. After all, being able to play is the most important to learning an instrument! Over the years I've also worked with many special needs students, both on the ASD spectrum as well as ADHD or other learning differences. I have a lot of experience responding to different levels of comprehension, accessibility requirements and modifications, as well as behavioural modifications within my teaching. As always I take a student-first approach and keep an open line of communication with both my student and their family to learn how to best work together to provide fun, engaging lessons.
