The most important job of a music teacher is to create a safe and respectful space to learn. Lessons can bring on a lot of anxiety for students. It could be because they're unfamiliar with the instrument, notation, musical terms in general, or they're anxious their instructor will be disappointed in their progress. Each student is unique and will not grow and progress at the same speed. Because of this, every student needs a unique approach to their lessons.
I believe in structuring lessons around what the student is interested in, while still ingraining the importance of building technique and doing exercises that may not be so fun. Students deserve to pick the genres they are interested in, the pieces or songs they want to play, and work towards the sound they want to achieve.
Music can be such a powerful tool for expression and my goal is to give students a voice through music!
I am currently enrolled in the BMus program at Laurier for classical guitar, specializing in performance.
I began learning guitar at the the age of 12. I was interested in fingerstyle, indie music, R&B, etc. At the age of 16 I began studying classical guitar and have loved it ever since! I have taken private guitar lessons with various teachers for 4 years. I have also taken music theory lessons, ear training lessons, and composition lessons. I have taken part in masterclasses with world-class musicians like Iliana Matos, Drew Henderson, and Steve Cowan and Adam Cicchillitti. I plan to continue my education after my undergraduate and continue getting better at guitar!
Throughout high school I experimented with several genres of music and joined several ensembles like concert band, school rock bands, show choir, and R&B band. While immersing myself in more contemporary genres at school, I was learning classical guitar on the side. I feel that being part of such diverse ensembles and taking the time to study different genres has made me a well-rounded musician with an appreciation for every genre.
