Teaching Philosophy

I think that playing music is very important to any individual as it can become a life long friend in helping you achieve what you want musically and creatively in the world. When you are feeling certain emotions the only way to express yourself is playing the instrument. Piano shows the student that through repeated work and dedication you can become a better musician and individual. I love to talk about theory and how it is integrated in the students learning process and to correct the student is my greatest joy. Also I think that playing musically and learning pieces at your own pace are important. I encourage more intermediate students to push themselves further and to really listen to their own playing as they progress to higher levels!

Musical Education

I am currently a 3rd year student attending York University for my Bachelor of Music in Fine Arts, which includes studio performance classes in piano and composition/theory classes. I studied piano privately from the age of five until the age of 21. My teachers were classically trained one of my teachers who's name is Simon was trained by a teacher from Moscow Conservatory. My principal teachers who were Simon and Maltilda had high standards for me. In addition I performed in two piano competitions one that was Toronto International Music Festival and the other being the ORMTA Branch Competition. During my time at York University I also performed showcases where I'd play my selected music on stage for other pianists to see. I was also in the York University Wind Symphony where I'd play trumpet with other band players and I greatly enjoy playing with other musicians. I also got the chance to do composition classes and got to learn composition from Luis Rameriz who receives commissions from TSO. Another piano professor I learned from is Dr. Katherine Dowling who taught exceptionally well about the piano and to fix posture, and to create music rather than just playing.

Awards and Distinctions

I won a grade 12 communication and technology award.

Special Skills and Training

I've spent my childhood playing piano from young age and I've always been involved in some sort of musical activity. Some of my special skills include listening to my students playing and knowing if they play a wrong note. I had a piano teacher who gave me tips and tricks on how to play the piano through finger posture I took theory lessons outside of school and one thing you ought to know about me is that even if I got a low grade initially on my practice exams I still managed to really well on my actual exams. I would like to teach that type of mentality when it comes to music to my students as well. I like to encourage my students by telling them to keep going when it gets rough. I also make jokes and connect new and interesting musical ideas when talking about music and theory and history.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
