I vividly remember the first time, around age five, I heard a recording of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. I started dancing with such an uncontrollable joy that I can still feel it today. This joy is the driving factor behind my teaching philosophy. While the pursuit of learning an instrument requires and aids in the development of discipline and focus, above all, it should bring joy. Gone are the days of the angry and withholding music teacher. I start every lesson by listening to something new, together. Sometimes my student picks, sometimes I pick, and we take a moment for exploration and discovery through listening, dancing, discussion, and play. Next, we work through technical exercises and repertoire. We will focus on the classical fundamentals, but all genres are considered, giving special consideration to female and BIPOC composers and creators. My studio is a safe space for all students, including those from traditionally marginalized backgrounds, and LGBTQ+ students.
I am a classically trained pianist from the United States with over 25 years of training and experience. I began studying piano as a tot around age three and continued through my university years. My teachers were impeccably trained. Their pedigrees included tenure with Ithca College in New York, sessions with Igor and Soulima Stravinsky, and significant contributions to the modern composition landscape.
As a soloist and chamber musician, I have extensive knowledge of the standard repertoire and additional experience in musical theatre, cabaret and popular music.
Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition winner, 2005
Detroit Together Men's Chorus Artistic Director's Award, 2018
One of the great joys of my career is the 15+ years I've spent as a collaborative pianist with both vocal and instrumental performers. I've worked with performers of all ages, supporting them through recitals, school competitions, In addition, I was the audition/rehearsal accompanist and pit musician for stage productions of Grey Gardens, Titanic, The Last Five Years, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Legally Blonde at Stagecrafters Theatre in Royal Oak, MI. I also spent over a decade as the piano accompanist for the Detroit Together Men's Chorus. Teaching has been a wonderful and fulfilling part of my journey, working with students of all ages. In addition to teaching privately, I am currently an instructor with the St. Albert Children's Theatre. I've participated and performed in front of live audiences, on television, and as part of theater productions and would love to share my experience and love of music with you!
