For me, teaching music is like teaching sports, with a twist.
Teaching to play a sport or a musical instrument well,
involves engaging students in exercises that develop skill and mastery,
to be showcased on a field/rink/stage, for fun, self-esteem, solidarity, and to learn leadership skills.
Like when teaching sports, music occurs often in a team environment, which involves
learning how to communicate clear and confidently, as both the generator of a unique message with a common goal, and as a receiver of another’s message to achieve a victory (in sport) or harmony (in music).
Whereas developing skill in sport is mediated by a ball or a puck among teammates and for spectators, developing skill in music is mediated by the relationship a person has with their instrument, him/her/their self and how they communicate with their fellow musicians, and typically an audience.
Join me in your musical education for your highest aim. Let´s make it happen together.
To begin, in the beginning my family had a hand-me-down drumset with glitter, and I learned how to approach the drums by a junior high history teacher who only had one hand, but incredible will and bright curiosity… My first lesson in music, with a crummy set of drums, and a teacher with one hand who could play anything, was that for me in my musical journey, like my one-handed drum teacher, was that anything was possible as well for me and my glittery drums.
More formally, I was trained to play snare drum and drum set by David Schneider at his business called the Music Cellar (Winnipeg, Mb). Growing up, I played and performed with school bands (including in jazz combos and a wind ensemble), as well as with friends during the lunch hour, performing for our friends. I pursued higher level performance in honor band and also all star provincial (MB) jazz band (with Bernie Rose). I attended drum master classes with Omar Hakim (The Polic, Weather Report), Mike Mangini (Dream Theatre), and Peter Erskin (Kate Bush, Diana Krall, and Queen Latifah). Additionally, I played drum set for the Long and McQuade jazz band (1998-1999), directed by Janice Finlay (Winnipeg, Mb), who played saxophone with the Ron Paley Big Band. My crowning achievements were playing for Princess Anne at the Lyric Theatre in Assinniboine Park, and later at Manitoba Theatre Centre playing with Peter Appleyard, OC.
I have also studied human development and communication, earning 2 bachelor's degrees in psychology (2006), and linguistics (2016), and also a master's of arts in linguistics (2022).
In conclusion, my passion for clear and direct communication has inspired me to share my knowledge and inspire others to learn mindfulness, self-awareness, and skill in using the drum set as a medium for personal growth and connection with others, in a musical ensemble, and in life more broadly. I wish for all my students what I had, many adaptable musical skills for any platform upon which to thrive!
