Teaching Philosophy

I have played drums/percussion since age seven. Hearing the Beatles ( Ringo’s drumming) and The Santa Claus parade marching band drummers passing my house was the beginning of an ongoing and exciting passion that still continues today. I have spent countless hrs listening and honing my craft. I love and have a strong passion for music as a whole. My students can expect a strong focus on fundamentals and techniques as these are vital in early development. Grooves and phrasing around the drum kit will also be focused on to develop feel. Adult students can also expect technique and fundamentals with a heavy focus on groove and feel development. All students learn to read and understand music theory as it applies directly to drums. Ergonomics and ease of movement are vital to my teaching. All students will come to understand and use my technique ( the liquid effect) to create ease and flow wether please grooves fills or phrases on the drums. Groove is in the heart and all my students will have fun learning and playing drums and percussion.

Musical Education

I have attended Mohawk College- Applied Music program. While attending I studied with Kevin Dempsey and Ernie Porthouse. I have also studied with both teachers before and after Mohawk. I have studied with some of the best drummers in the world including;
Paul Delong cdn drummer/educator
Chuck Silverman ( video exchange lessons)
Jim Blackly cdn jazz legend
Dom Famularo USA ( worlds drumming ambassador)

Special Skills and Training

As I child I had an early passion for music and drums. I started lessons at age 10 and still study to this day. Learning is a lifetime pursuit for me. I have studied extensively with many different drummers/teachers since age 10. I have performed with hundreds of bands and have thousands of live shows under my belt. I’ve toured and recorded with many great artists/bands. I am also a readers choice drum set teacher gold award winner 2017 and 2020 for the Hamilton Ont area. I am a member of sabian cymbals and Vic Firth’s drum education team and have been so since 2009. I have studied with and taught side by side with Dom Famularo ( world’s global drumming Ambassador and world famous drum teacher) my extensive lesson experience as a student has helped me become a professional teacher with over 35 years of teaching experience. Teaching is in my sole and my students will benefit greatly from what I have to offer.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
