The voice is a very intimate and personal instrument. Every person has a unique voice, anatomy, and life story which cannot be replicated by anyone else. As a teacher, I want to help students explore their individual abilities, goals, and areas in which they wish to improve. It is very rewarding to become familiar with your own voice as well as gain the tools and awareness needed to be able to sing independently. I hope that anyone I teach walks away from their lessons with an appreciation for various styles of music and that the skills we develop together can be transferred to different aspects of their life. No matter the age, I believe that music should be approached in a flexible, playful, open-minded, and patient manner with room for imperfections throughout the process.
I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a double major in Opera Performace and German. In preparation for my post-secondary studies, I completed all three RCM theory examinations (basic to advanced rudiments) and studied fundamental piano skills with a private teacher.
A few scholarships that I am very grateful to have received during my post-secondary studies include the Mildred Johnson Scholarship in Music, MacInnes - Hallamore Scholarship, and the Elizabeth Lamberton Scholarship in Voice.
I partook in the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival several times during the first few years of studying classical singing. This was when I first experienced being formally "alone" on stage with no one else (aside from my pianist) and got a taste for showcasing my voice in a very vulnerable but rewarding way. In 2016, I was very fortunate to participate in the Amalfi Coast Summer Program on the beautiful southern coastline of Italy. I attended this program with my voice teacher and a handful of her other students where we performed daily public recitals as well as an abridged version of The Marriage of Figaro. I was introduced to many talented singers from around the world and discovered a new appreciation for staging, artistic interpretation, and teamwork. I have also worked as a Foreign Language Assistant in Duisburg, Germany helping students to improve their English skills alongside their main teacher. This was a very valuable experience for me in many ways, as I was immersed within a different culture/environment and had constant exposure to the German language.
