Teaching Philosophy

In summary, my journey thus far has been characterized by an unwavering curiosity for exploration, an ardent dedication to the musical arts, and a commitment to personal growth fostered through collaboration, persistent practice, and impactful performances.

Musical Education

I hold an associate degree and pursued a BA in music at Hong Kong Baptist University. My time there enriched my musical journey, particularly through engaging in performance classes focused on cello and piano music. My cello mentor, Yi-chun Chen, has been a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic since 2004, and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Baptist University since 2008. I was fortunate to be mentored by Bettey Yau Man Li in the realm of piano, a distinguished performer skilled in both piano and harpsichord. My journey thus far has been characterized by an unwavering curiosity for exploration, an ardent dedication to the musical arts, and a commitment to personal growth fostered through collaboration, persistent practice, and impactful performances.

I have always maintained an optimistic and dynamic outlook on life. Since childhood, I've been drawn to exploring novel experiences as a means to uncover my talents and derive a sense of satisfaction. During my early years, I embarked on the journey of mastering both the piano and cello, even dabbling in the violin to broaden my musical horizons.

Special Skills and Training

My involvement in wind ensembles played a significant role in expanding my musical knowledge and refining my instrumental abilities. Through extensive reading and research, I further deepened my understanding and passion for music. This time was essential for learning how to collaborate effectively and for emphasizing the importance of punctuality and a strong work ethic. All of this was geared towards achieving a shared goal of improvement and excellence in preparation for various competitions. Beyond ensemble participation, I had the opportunity to mentor newcomers, helping them adapt to their chosen instruments and cultivate their emerging talents. This period also allowed me to diversify my musical expertise by joining an orchestral ensemble and participating in specialized training programs. Serving as the principal cellist in the ensemble, I had the privilege of performing at various venues, which not only honed my skills but also enriched my emotional connection to music. Memorable experiences like international exchange programs have further solidified my passion for music and fostered enduring friendships. In summary, my musical journey has been marked by a continuous curiosity for exploration, a fervent dedication to the arts, and a commitment to personal growth achieved through persistent practice, impactful performances, and meaningful collaborations.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
