I strongly believe that everyone can learn to understand music, no matter their previous experience, and that life is better when you can enjoy music! My job is to help you enjoy music more by creating a low-pressure, stress-free learning environment where we explore the things you are interested in. I love teaching students of all ages and abilities, including young children and adults.
I have a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from St. Olaf College, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at McGill University. I will graduate with my Master's in Spring 2024. I have been playing piano and studying privately for nearly twenty years, and singing for my entire life. I sang in children's choirs and then accompanied my high school choir. I've been singing professionally in choirs and at churches since 2018, when I began my college studies. I've sung as a chorister with major orchestras across the USA, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, Symphony San Jose, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. I am classically trained vocally and in piano with several teachers, and I have taken university level courses in music theory, piano literature, choral and voice literature, orchestration and composition, aural training and dictation, counterpoint, and modern music.
I am attending McGill University on a full scholarship, and received scholarships and awards while completing my bachelor's, including the Cassler Music Scholarship, and the Ella Fitzgerald award for jazz singing.
I learned to appreciate and love music from my dad, who played piano and organ at church and with community choirs in my hometown. He taught me how to play piano and be sensitive to other musicians and people around me while making music. I have extensive experience in accompanying, singing, teaching, and conducting my choirs while I pursue my Master's in Montreal. I teach privately with a small studio as well as with my choirs weekly, and sing professionally on the weekends through gigs and church jobs. I also used to sing in a jazz ensemble, and competed in the United States at national competitions for jazz singing and scatting.
