Teaching Philosophy

I believe that music is a powerful and universal language that has the potential to transform lives and inspire individuals of all ages. As a music teacher, my philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student possesses a unique musical voice and the capacity to experience the joy of making music. I believe in the power of music to inspire and transform lives. As a music teacher, my primary goal is to ignite the spark of inspiration in my students. I aim to create an engaging and supportive learning environment where students not only acquire technical skills but also develop a deep passion for music.
I recognize that each student is on a unique musical journey with their own set of strengths, challenges, and aspirations. My teaching approach is student-centered, and I tailor my instruction to meet the individual needs and goals of each student. This includes considering their preferred musical genres, learning styles, and pace of progress. My ultimate aim as a music teacher is to make a positive impact on my students' lives. Whether they pursue music as a career or a lifelong hobby, I want them to carry with them the valuable lessons learned through music – discipline, creativity, perseverance, and the ability to communicate through a universal language.
In essence, my music teaching philosophy is centered on nurturing students' musical potential, fostering a deep love for music, and providing a comprehensive and inclusive education. I want to inspire, celebrate individuality, and leave a lasting, positive impact on my students' musical journeys.

Musical Education

I started voice and piano at the tender age of 5 years. My teachers were classically trained from the UK and Netherlands with exceptionally high standards, and the training I underwent was rigorous and detailed.
I hold an Associate Diploma in Music Performance & pedagogy and am presently pursuing a Licentiate in Music Performance from the trinity college of music, London. Additionally, I have successfully completed ABRSM exams in Voice, Piano, and Music Theory. I have a wealth of teaching experience ranging from beginners to advanced levels in Voice and beginners to intermediate levels in Piano, I have honed my skills as an educator. My musical journey includes performances with renowned choirs and bands, where I’ve contributed both as a chorister and soloist. I’ve showcased my talents through numerous solo performances as well. Furthermore, I have accompanied performers on the piano, adding another dimension to my musical abilities. Currently, I am furthering my music education by studying Music Industry Arts and Performance at Centennial College, solidifying my commitment to a multifaceted career in the music industry.

Special Skills and Training

I remember looking at my father sing and brother playing the piano ever since I was a child. I think that was what got me inspired to pursue music. I've always been singing from the time I could say a few words says my mother and here I am now as a voice teacher trying to help others develop their own voice. My initial training was with my older brother he helped me recognize my voice and try new songs and repertoire. I started my music studies with Mrs. Bridget Halpe` (LRAM) and Mrs. Hasinee Andree (LRSM) my teacher's who have a wealth of experience. I started at a very young age learning and discovering a lot in Voice and later learning Piano as a second instrument. Where i completed my ABRSM grades 1-8 in voice and I did piano and music theory and soon I completed my Associate of the Trinity College of Music, London in Music Performance (Voice), which included extensive studies in both performance and vocal pedagogy. I'm also currently reading for my Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music, London in Music Performance (Voice) under Ms. Peshali Yapa (BMus (Hons) - Voice) long-time friend and mentor. I learned the joy of connecting with people and lifting the human spirit through singing. I'm thankful for growing up in a home where my entire family being musical. They helped me pursue music and make it a lifelong career. My experience as a performer, singer, vocalist my stage experience includes starting from Singing Competitions for the British federation of Music, London at a very young age and winning the London school of Music award for four consecutive years. Guest soloist with soprano Natalie Gooneratne for the Lanka Alzheimer’s foundation. Throughout my college years I was an active participant in multiple choral organizations including a chorus member in Voice of praise conducted by Denham Pereira, Colombo philharmonic, Chamber music society chorale and VOX ONE. I performed for ‘Coro Sacrum’ under the baton of British Conductor, Gregory Rose & the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC), singing the celebrated Mass in C major, Op.86 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Also, the grateful Opportunity to sing at the Temple Trees on the invitation of the Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe (2016) and many other performances such as; Weddings, Open mic nights, Dinner dances and Concerts. In addition to my performance experience, I taught at number of music institutions and did workshops in voice and piano lessons. With this diverse performance experience, combined with my years as a church musician, singer as well and a performer in various places. I bring a well-rounded perspective to teaching voice. This equips me to prepare students for concerts, exams, audition prep and to teach students in a way that protects and grows their voice naturally while exploring the excitement of music.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
