I approach teaching from the perspective that a student's enjoyment of music and playing their instrument is very important and can greatly help with their learning. I I think that a positive and encouraging attitude is generally best. That said, I often wouldn't hesitate (depending on the personality and ability of an individual student) to give my students challenging assignments and gentle constructive criticism.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Music from Dundalk Institute of Technology. I've been playing the piano for over 20 years. I was originally classically trained and was awarded a grade 7 from the Royal Irish Academy of Music (as well as a grade 8 in violin).
Since then, I have been self-teaching; continuously learning, improving my skills, and expanding my knowledge of different styles and genres. I'm self-taught in the guitar and drums, additionally, and have been playing each of those instruments for approximately 15 years. I received tutorship in the drums as my chosen instrument in college.
I'm also well educated in music theory. This comes as a result of completing a grade 6 in music theory with the Royal Irish Academy of Music, my time studying music in college, and through my own ongoing and consistent study of music theory.
