Teaching Philosophy

Learning music is a unique journey for every person. My primary aim is to instill a lifelong love of learning and to share the joy of music with each of my students. I strongly believe in the growth mindset, and as my own music teacher used to say: "Hard work beats talent...every time!" I know from my own experience that developing musical skills take persistence and determination, just like learning any new skill, and it is deeply rewarding.

Classically-trained in piano, I teach RCM piano repertoire up to Level 8, in addition to popular music and explorations in accompaniment, composition, and sacred music. I emphasize both the artistic and academic components of performance, technique, and theory. I love teaching theory and ear training, as well as rhythm reading and sight singing too.

As a voice teacher, I have a versatile teaching style with a focus on healthy singing techniques and exploring the untapped potential of the voice. I specialize in Musical Theatre, Contemporary Voice, and Choral Music. I teach students ages 7 and up, and I believe it's never too late to start learning music!

Musical Education

I received my B.A. Degree in Music in 2018, graduating with Distinction at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I studied both voice and piano (RCM) , starting private lessons at age 6 for piano and age 11 for voice. In 2014, I was selected as the recipient of a Full Tuition Scholarship for the Douglas College Music Diploma Program, which I graduated from in 2016. During the same year, I received the Lance Ryan Vocal Achievement Award of Distinction and the Music Student Achievement Award of Distinction.

Special Skills and Training

I grew up immersed in the world of music and the performing arts, being rigorously trained in Classical Piano/Voice, Musical Theatre, and Contemporary style. As a music educator, I have over 12 years of teaching experience. I've taught private piano and voice lessons to students of all ages. I've also worked as a Music Tutor at a local college, preparing college music students for their theory, ear training, rhythm reading, and sight-singing (solfege) exams. In 2016, I received my Certificate in CRLA International Tutor Training for Level 1 & 2. Throughout my career, I've performed in numerous concerts, musicals, and local events. These experiences have given me insight in helping my students to succeed, as they pursue their own music studies and gain essential performance skills.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
