Teaching Philosophy

The study of music is one which can help one develop in so many ways of life! As an innately emotional practice, it can bring one more in touch with themselves and the vulnerability of all things around them.
Practicing music is something which works both mind and body and can be a huge aid for people both young and old to grow in all aspects of life!
Everyone has music which they love and that brings them joy! Learning an instrument, especially the trumpet, may be demanding, but is a great way to strengthen that bond with their favourite song or artist.
I truly believe that formal music training is a fantastic way to bring out the inner artist in people of all ages and backgrounds to create art that can bring communities small and large together in beautiful ways!
I know when I was younger taking the step of getting proper music education propelled my hobby into a passion I will pursue for the rest of my life.
I hope with my students that I could help them find their voice and joy within the music idiom! I wish to show them that music, whether practice, performance, or listening, should always be a joyous practise which will continue to strengthen the mind, body, and soul for as long as they continue to play!

Musical Education

I completed a 4 year Bachelor of Music degree with a specialty in Jazz Performance on the trumpet at the University of Toronto in 2023. During those years I focused heavily on learning all about the jazz idiom, while also experimenting with RnB, Funk, and open improvisation. I also studied music production and sound design for film and video games. For my efforts in that field I graduated with a Certificate of Music Technology.
I have studied trumpet with renowned musicians such as Rebecca Hennessy, Jason Logue, and Luise Heyerhoff. Throughout these lessons I gained an invaluable education on both Classical and Jazz playing in ways of technique, tone production, and much more.
Along with my studies on the horn itself, both private and institutional education has given me an in-depth understanding of topics like music theory, history, and ear training.

Special Skills and Training

I have completed RCM classical theory up the level 9. I have and continue to gain experience by being an active performing artist in the Toronto music scene. I have played at such locations as Drom Taberna, The Rex Hotel and Jazz Bar, TD International Jazz Fest, and much more. My time as a performing musician has exposed me to many diverse musical styles and techniques, which I believe are crucial in offering a fulfilling musical education to students. I also had the privilege of leading a jazz band for junior students. This experience allowed me to develop valuable teaching skills, such as communication, patience, and the ability to tailor instruction to individual needs. It has always been immensely rewarding to witness my students' growth and enthusiasm for music!

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
