Teaching Philosophy

I believe that any and all music is valuable, and that's why I try to remain open to new musical experiences in my teaching approach. For me, a student that is interested in classical music can be taught to love music and the piano as much as someone who enjoys country music or pop. Keeping the joy of music alive through my teaching is my main goal; whether it be improving a students musical technique, encouraging their curiosity, or even giving them room to be creative. The last thing I want in a lesson is stress and anxiety, the student should always be left with excitement for the next lesson! That includes Adult students as well. If my lessons weren't fun for me, then I wouldn't be doing music right now. I want the same sort of enthusiasm I felt, to be felt by my students.

Musical Education

I am currently studying music composition at UBC to earn my Bachelor of Music. I spent the first two years of my Bachelor at Douglas College however, where I earned a Diploma in PF Arts and Full Scholarship for my first two years.

I had my first piano lessons from age 13 at Langley Community Music School. My piano teacher also helped me with composition which I was also pursuing. I eventually took summer composition lessons at Douglas college when I was 16. During this time I was also became involved in my highschool music program at Walnut Grove Secondary School which included composition, concert band, choir, guitar lessons, and playing for the school musical. It was here that I learned the many different learning processes and styles of different kinds of music. Near the end of highschool I got my RCM level 8 in piano and theory, and eventually level 10 in Piano a few years later. In post-secondary I took private piano lessons as well as composition lessons, and I began to try playing music in styles that were unfamiliar like Jazz, Pop, Rock. It was at this time that I also learned to accompany singers on the piano, and start singing and writing my own songs which I performed at recitals. Most recently I performed a show I co-created at the Fringe Festival where I learned to do musical improvisation and improvised performance outside of my university experience.

- Won 2 LCMS Young Composer Competition prizes of 500$ MAY 2020/23
- Won Performance Based Tuition Scholarship (Full Ride) MAY 2020
- Won Sharon Stevenson Scholarship for 10,000$ MAY 2020
- Completed RCM Grade 10 in Piano and Grade 8 in Theory JULY 2020
- Training in percussion and guitar at Walnut Grove Secondary SEPT 2017

Special Skills and Training

As a composer I have had the opportunity to work with performers who are performing my music. Working with performers on interpretation of my own music gives me a special skill for precision and sensitivity when listening to performers play. Therefore, I listen to each piece as if it were my own, which applies to when students are playing music. My goal is to make sure the music sings, no matter what composer it is, and this skill will definitely apply to how I go about preparing students for performance.

Policies


1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
