Teaching Philosophy

I began learning piano when I was eight years old and although some time has passed since I completed piano lessons, I continue to play piano as a hobby. When I was younger, I was not keen on practicing piano daily and going through the examination processes, but since I now no longer have official lessons, I can play piano to relax and destress. Playing the piano has been an integral part of my life as I grew up playing it for years and years. Additionally, I have obtained teaching experience with children, through previous piano teacher jobs and tutoring roles. Throughout my time working with children, I have expanded my scope of teaching and learned to adapt and tailor lessons specific to each student, maximizing the use of our lesson time and making the learning process as enjoyable and efficient as possible. I enjoy working with children and teens of various ages and I understand the learning differences with each student that I may encounter. I find it very rewarding and motivating to share my love for music and teach students about the piano. I hope that my students will feel comfortable and motivated, enjoy the lessons, and continue loving music as they dive into the beautiful art of music.

Musical Education

I obtained my level 10 piano practical and theory certificates in 2019 and 2020 through the Royal Conservatory of Music. Since the age of eight, I have taken private lessons in piano, harmony, counterpoint, and history. My piano teacher was a certified Royal Conservatory of Music teacher who was meticulous with technique and musical style. Throughout my teenage years, I also participated in band class in which I learned how to play the clarinet and alto saxophone in a group setting.

Special Skills and Training

I began my teaching journey with my younger siblings as they began learning piano. That was when my love for teaching began, and as I grew up, almost every job I worked and every volunteer opportunity I had was related to teaching or counselling children. Officially, I have been teaching piano for about a year at a studio. There are certainly difficulties with some students as their learning styles vary tremendously but through the support of my coworkers and my experience as a student, I can confidently say that I am learning the skills to train and teach my students as best fit for them. My work experience with children involves working with children of various ages and with children with diverse abilities. I have been trained to handle certain behaviours appropriately as well. All of these experiences have helped me to grow as a person and a teacher and will reflect as I teach my piano students.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
