Teaching Philosophy

Music is a natural connector of people. No culture in the world exists without music. It is so intertwined with our day to day lives that you cannot go anywhere without hearing it. It allows us to express ourselves, to be understood, and to understand others. Music is also an art form that encapsulates our mathematical minds, our creative spirit, and our fine motor skills. It can be painfully complex or as simple as counting to three.

As a teacher, I believe it is most important to allow students to be creative, and to foster their love of learning. Typically, I try to cater my lessons to my students’ interests. For example, if a student is more interested in pop rather than classical, I am happy to learn more pop songs with them. Or if they really want to learn about harmony, I’ll focus more on that. Every person has unique musical goals, therefore, I will create an individual curriculum for each student to help them reach their goals the most effectively.

Musical Education

I am entering my third year of the B.Ed/ B. Mus program at McGill University. My degree concentration is in classical piano. For two years at McGill, I took private piano lessons with Dr. Julia Gavrilova, a Russian pianist, professor, and accompanist. Dr. Gavrilova was a former student of the concert pianist, Prof. Marina Mdivani. I have passed all of the piano performance requirements for my university program. The only courses remaining for my degree are some general music and education classes.

At the age of six, I started taking piano lessons from the Moldovan concert pianist Vitali Mihauliuc in Dubai, UAE. Later, I moved to Canada and studied with Sara Goodwin in Sarnia, Ontario, and Ed Lebarron at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where I earned my grade 10 RCM piano certificate.

Additionally, I studied classical flute privately for eight years with Sara Goodwin at Van Goozen Music. I performed in the my high school concert band and jazz band on flute. In 2018 and 2019 I performed in the concert band program at Ithaca College’s summer music academy in New York state.

Special Skills and Training

I’m experienced at adapting to individual learning styles and working with students who are neurodivergent. The past three summers, I have worked at day camps with kids and taught kids with physical and mental disabilities, forcing me to change the way I approached every student. That being said, the diversity of people I ran into was refreshing. Each student brought a new perspective, which is so important when doing a creative activity like music. As well as being a pianist, I have training in choral ensembles, musical theatre, concert band, and jazz band. These various experiences have given me experience in various musical genres and with many instruments, most notably flute and voice.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
