Teaching Philosophy

A nice question to start with will be “What does music mean to me?” The answer is...a lot! Music is all around us, in our daily lives. We go take the subway, we might hear background music in the the subway station. We go to a fancy restaurant, there might be classical piano music playing. We do sports at the gym, agitated, fast speed music will be played to stimulate our exercise. In general, I’d say, it feels good! Even though over the years, my taste for music has been changing. But music definitely provides me comfort and peace. As a result, I want to bring this joy to youngsters and adults. Teaching piano should not only seen as “teaching piano”. To me, it is the process to bring beautiful melody of music to music lovers. They should be able to get in touch with different forms of music, for example, jazz, popular music, classical piano or even improvise. Years of teaching allow me to feel confident and committed in teaching piano. I hope more students will obtain insightful knowledge and skills in piano.

Musical Education

I started playing piano at the age of seven, and ever since then I never stopped playing. My strong interest towards art started when I was living in Guangzhou China. When I was offered to choose between playing piano and dancing ballet, I devoted myself to piano. At the age of 14, I obtained the 9th grade of piano exam of China Conservatory with first class honor. Luckily I didn't let go of my piano learning journey after coming to Canada. Although there were lots to catch up in terms of language and school, I was lucky enough to encounter great piano mentors. At the age of 17, I passed all the requirements for Royal Conservatory of Music piano level 10 with first class honors. I started teaching children and young adults when I was doing my bachelor at University of British Columbia. After graduation, I worked at a private high school as a music teacher. Currently I am a registered teacher under the Royal Conservatory of Music, also holding elementary teacher's course with RCM. I look forward to bringing the joy of music to more students.

Special Skills and Training

Throughout the years, I have been living and teaching in different countries, for example, Mainland China, HK, Vancouver and now Ottawa. I worked at private schools and also at music academy. Over the years, music provides me the opportunities to meet various, different kinds of students and parents. I hope my experience will better improve my music knowledge and teaching skills.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
