Teaching Philosophy

Music is for the soul, and I believe that all humans should have the opportunities to connect their soul to others through years of documented music. Formal education in music serves to support that connection and, in my opinion, allows for students to discover the sounds that speak to them and the relatable emotions that every human has gone through.

As a small flute player, I am also extremely aware of the bodily and muscular attention needed to support the instrument and the students' sound. As such, physical awareness and knowledge is just as important to me as musical knowledge.

Finally, I approach all my students with love, care, and support. I believe that all students, whether young or adult, are entitled to receive my support so that their music can blossom without stress. I also strongly believe that music develops confidence, sensitivity, and empathy in all learners and players.

Musical Education

I am currently studying Flute Performance, BMus at the University of Victoria and will be finishing my degree at the University of Calgary. This has provided me with intensive flute performance classes and opportunities, as well as exceptional knowledge of theory.
I first studied classical RCM piano privately from age five to ten before transitioning to the flute at age twelve. My flute teacher, an alumnus of the University of Calgary and with a flute artist diploma in Italy, is detailed oriented with focus on the emotional content of music.
Through my many years as a flutist, I have accumulated ensemble experience through the MRU Senior Academy Program, the UVic Wind Symphony, the UVic Orchestra, and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. These programs and ensembles provided me with the necessary interpersonal training to work collaboratively, and included performances with professionals. Additionally, I have played in the Hakuna Fermata Wind Quintet, a student-based ensemble that emphasizes interpersonal connection to better the musical content

Special Skills and Training

I have spent many summers doing programs with flutists from all around the world. From playing in a flute choir in Phoenix, Arizona to playing solo repertoire for word class flute soloists and orchestral musicians like Lorna McGhee, I have experienced many different perspectives regarding the intricacies of flute and music playing. These varying perspectives and knowledge has personally enriched my own playing, and has connected me to a "family tree" of flutists that will further connect and touch the playing of my own students.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
