As a creative worker in music I believe sound is a fundamental part of life and community. Sound strikes us immediately and leaves just as quickly. And I believe that music captures emotions and experiences that would otherwise be fleeting. Music is a way for people to understand the present they live in.
I also believe that music is a great discipline. I will always remember when my first composition teacher told me to write my piece again, but better. It is comforting to be the best musician you have ever been, and to put your mistakes behind you. And to have a teacher who wants you to be your best self.
I have a PhD in music composition from the University of North Texas, which included a related field degree in music theory.
My private composition studies started at age 17 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My teacher then was composer in residence for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and my interest in composing was positively shaped by Winnipeg's classical music scene. Before University I studied piano privately under the Conservatory Canada Method and continued to major in piano, during my Bachelor's in Music at the University of Toronto.
In higher education I have had the privilege of teaching music theory, composition, and orchestration.

I have attended numerous professional development workshops for composers in both the Canada and the U.S. These opportunities gave me access to professional ensembles, mentors, and audiences. It has enriched my understanding of music as a collaborative process. I find collaborating with students to reach their goals is not so different.
