Music is a skill that I whole heartedly believe is accessible to everyone, regardless of background, ability, or talent. I have seen musicians with superb natural ability but little incentive to practice, surpassed in skill by newcomers with no musical background, but a strong desire to improve. What sets apart a great from a good musician is the drive to keep getting better.
The right teacher can really make or break the study of music for an individual. While some students thrive on drilling scales, others require a frequent change in pace and content. Though technique is an essential aspect of mastering an instrument, it should not come at the expense of the joy of making music. In my teaching practice I strive to make even scales enjoyable to work on and I believe that technique should always support repertoire, and never overshadow it. A good teacher understands that each student learns differently. A great teacher is one who fosters a love of a particular musical instrument or style and gives students the tools to take control of their own learning.
