My teaching philosophy is centred around helping my students understand threee elements of music: rhythm, harmony and melody. My belief is that understanding these three elements on their own and also how they interact with each other, helps my students deepen their musical skills.
Music theory and note reading are two important aspects of my teaching style. I also believe that reading music is very important. Reading music allows you to understand it in a clearer way and also it helps you to collaborate with others.
A third aspect of my teaching style is improvisation. I will often improvise with my students during the lesson. This helps them to understand that they can be creative and express themselves through music. We do not always have to follow the notes on a page. Sometimes we can be free and play whatever we want - within certain restrictions of course.
I have an honours BA in music theory and composition from Western University, which included performance classes in classical guitar and piano.
I studied violin, piano and guitar privately from the age of eight till the age of eighteen. My guitar teaching helped me to do performances of bossa nova music at local cafes in my hometown. I also did performances of classical guitar music at churches and wineries throughout the Niagara region. Furthermore, I perfermed as the lead guitarist for rock, blues and ska bands throughout my teenage years.
Since graduating from university, I have been focusing on composition in a neo-classical style as well as piano and guitar playing. Due to my high personal standards, I am always learning and pursuing music at the highest level possible.
My unique and special skill is music therapy. After my bachelor's degree, I did a masters at Wilfrid Laurier Unviersity in music therapy. I now use some of these methods in my music teaching. Improvisation is a big part of this. Through improvising together, we can develop better relationships with our students. I also realized through music therapy that learning music is not just about skills or performances. It is an inherently healing practice that can improve our mental health and allow us to have more fulfilling lives.
