Teaching Philosophy

With over 25 years of teaching experience, I pride myself on offering a personalized approach for every student, whether adults or children. Lessons should be fun, encouraging, patient, and free of pressure. They should also provide students with a safe space to experiment, explore musical interests, and find their passion for music.

As my students embark on their musical journeys, I'm there with them, providing guidance and diverse experiences. I've helped students prepare for all levels of RCM exams, assisted them in recording albums, and even helped them write sheet music. I've also collaborated with school music teachers to create instrument parts for my students when needed.

While we cover the essential elements of music, I ensure each student's unique interests shape our lessons, creating a fun and imaginative learning environment. For over 25 years, I've prepared students for taking the practical and theoretical examinations of The Royal Conservatory of Music as a full-time private music educator. However, there is more to music than the classical genre; jazz was my first love, which I studied in college. My goal is to help each student find and develop their interests over time, whether classical, jazz, pop, composing music, or even learning the basics of music production.

For me, it's about more than just learning—it's about fostering a deep love for music, whether it's a cherished hobby or a budding career. My studio isn't just a place to learn; it's a place where music education becomes a personalized adventure tailored to each student's passions.

Musical Education

My passion for music led me to study at The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Toronto. I became an RCM-certified piano and theory teacher, earned my Elementary Piano Pedagogy Certificate, and have taught for over 25 years in my private studio, preparing students for RCM examinations in piano and theory at all levels. I also attended The Alberta College Conservatory of Music in Edmonton. Wanting to expand my horizons, I studied orchestration for film and television and music production through Berklee College of Music Online in Boston, where I received my two specialist certificates in those subjects. Additionally, I took theory and performance courses at Grant MacEwan Community College. While establishing my private teaching practice, I took the organist and choir director position for over five years at King of Kings Lutheran Church in St. Albert. Every step of this journey has been instrumental in shaping me into the musician and educator I am today.

Special Skills and Training

My love for music started in childhood with my first piano teacher, my mother. She encouraged me to dive into the world of music. I often brought my five-octave Yamaha Keyboard on family vacations. I'm constantly eager to play, explore, and learn more, which I encourage in my students. I earned both my Specialist Certificate in Producing Music With Logic and Specialist Certificate in Orchestration for Film and TV through Berklee College of Music Online in Boston. I received additional training in composition and preparing orchestral scores and parts through Thinkspace Education and studied composition with the Open College of the Arts in the UK.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
