Teaching Philosophy

It’s important to remember that learning music and being able to play music is not only a wonderful way of self-expression, but also an asset that can help you excel in all aspects of life. It’s not just the music itself that you learn but the growth, discipline, creativity, and self-discovery you attain during the entire process.

My approach to teaching involves fostering a genuine appreciation and understanding of the music you’re playing, and it stems from a personal challenge during my time as a young pianist. Channeling the motivation to attend lessons and practice is a common struggle among young students. I firmly believe that structuring the lesson around the student’s likes and strengths will encourage them to learn effectively and motivate them to continue. Along with this, I engage in an interactive learning approach and strong communication between teacher-to-student by reminding students that I am also there to support them, creating a comfortable and safe space for them to voice any concerns and struggles. I also want to play an active role in ensuring that students structure their independent practice properly. At-home practice and being fully committed to one’s own progress is a key success factor to falling in love with an instrument.

Musical Education

My musical education began when I was 6 years old and it started with piano. I dabbled in other instruments such as the flute but ultimately decided to commit to piano. I’ve competed at competitions yearly such as the Kiwani’s Music Festival and participated in orchestras and violin duets. I completed various RCM examinations and theory requirements, finally obtaining my ARCT diploma in Piano Performance and passing with a practical mark of 87. I have also completed all required theory, harmony, history, and analysis requirements within the RCM syllabus, averaging a score of 80+ across all written components. During my ARCT training, I was mentored under Canadian-Israeli pianist Michael Berkovsky, a The Juilliard School graduate who is currently a faculty member at The Glenn Gould School.

Special Skills and Training

From a very young age, I spent a lot of my time listening to all sorts of music outside my classical training. After hearing songs that resonated with me, I’d often sit at my piano and begin figuring out the notes to a particular song that I wanted to play. During lessons, I always looked forward to when my teacher would test me on intervals, playbacks, and chord progressions, as it was like playing a game to me. After learning more about harmony and composition, I find myself transcribing songs in my free time. I often pick up on songs in movies or shows that I like, only to find that there is no sheet music available online for it. Although I’m still in the beginner stages of music transcription, I find it extremely fun to figure out the little nuances in the music I’m hearing and the feeling of finally finding that “right” sound is satisfying, to say the least.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
