I believe that music must have heart behind it to be truly meaningful. As Beethoven himself once said; “to play a wrong note is insignificant, to play without passion is inexcusable.” A love for music is a vital part of a musician and I seek to help every student discover it in themselves. I encourage my students to look for and find music they find interesting to play and learn, and to practice it in between lessons so I can provide the most accurate and helpful feedback I can. There is something truly fulfilling in being able to help a student develop their abilities doing something they love. That is the most important part of teaching for me.
I have been involved with playing music all my life. Instruments I’ve learned in the past include the violin, drums, and piano. I’m currently a passionate clarinetist and saxophonist, and I hope to be able to become a successful soloist playing them in the future. Currently, I am a student in UBC learning to become the best musician I can be on both instruments.
In my time playing the clarinet and saxophone I have played in many ensembles and orchestras, learning many things from each of my experiences. These include many school bands, youth orchestras in the lower mainland and also simply jamming with my friends. I consider these experiences just as integral to my musical growth as the lessons I have taken and the concerts I have performed.
In my time playing the clarinet I have participated in various music competitions across the lower mainland. Honours I have achieved from these include:
1st place in the Kiwanis Music Festival, in multiple years.
Platinum Standing in the Vaya International Competition, in multiple years.
Class Winner in the Senior Woodwind Division of the White Rock Music Festival.
2nd place in the Ambrose Matilda International Competition.
In my final years of high school, I was the principal clarinetist for the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. It involved leading the rest of the clarinets through difficult passages in the music, helping the other woodwind members with any questions they had about the music, and taking on any especially challenging solos. In many ways the experience resembled teaching music students, and I found it very fulfilling and informative. In my time teaching music, I have found that this experience has helped me be a much better instructor.
