I've dedicated the majority of my life to music, and it has become both an incredible source of joy, and the lens through which I see the world. Sharing that joy of discovery with others is very rewarding, and I believe that music teaches lessons about life that are extremely valuable and applicable outside the studio. I want to be a part of the important tradition that is music education, and give back to the community of musicians that has given me so much since I was little.
Musically, I'm interested in teaching anything that pulls the student's ear in an interesting direction. Anything that makes them want to hear more, or say "why did that sounds so good?". This discovery of new styles, harmonies, and timbres is essential to a student's musical growth, and development of taste. I love being a part of that exploration, and helping students find and play the music they love best.
I have been studying the guitar since I was four years old. I started lessons in Edmonton, Alberta, following the RCM curriculum until the end of high school. I went on to attend McGill University from 2016 to 2020, studying with GFA-winner Jerome Ducharme and graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance with a minor in Music Theory. Since then, I've been performing, teaching guitar lessons and working for Chronograph Records, a boutique jazz label in Calgary.
Anne Burrows Music Foundation Scholarship and Winspear Scholarship for Advanced Classical Music (2016-2020), Edward C Wood Scholarship (2016/17), Helene Gombay Memorial Prize (2017/18), Grace Evelyn Tuttle Scholarship and William Arthur Weir Memorial Award (2018/19), David Moyse Guitar Scholarship and Sarah Fischer Memorial Award (2019/20).
My primary area of expertise outside of Guitar is Theory, for which I took numerous advanced courses during university. I find musical analysis fascinating, and believe that it is integral to the role of the interpreter and performer. I love extracting the underlying secrets and structures of musical works, exploring those findings with students, and teaching them how to do the same.
