Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every student is unique, and no one learns the same way. My teaching philosophy is rooted in patience, adaptability, and inclusivity, ensuring that lessons are tailored to meet individual needs. I create a supportive and encouraging environment where students of all ages and abilities, including those who are neurodivergent, feel safe to explore and grow at their own pace. By celebrating each student’s strengths and addressing their challenges with empathy, I aim to nurture confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

Musical Education

I have an ARCT and LRCM diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, which included specialization in Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th/21st Century music. I have studied through private teaching for a number of years as well as having studied with André Laplante at Orford Music Academy.

Awards and Distinctions

- competed and won numerous classes in the Kiwanis Music Festivals of Guelph, Stratford, North York, Toronto, and Ottawa, receiving top awards (including the Miriam Russell Trophy in Stratford in 2013, and the Trophy donated by Pupils of Sybil Pink Grobba in Ottawa in 2015)
- four-time provincial finalist (OMFA – Ontario Music Festival Association), placing in the top 6 in 2013 in her category for Diploma level piano
- awarded third place in Canada for her achievements during the nation-wide Canadian Music Competition in the Under-23 Piano category in 2017
- many compositional works included award-winning short film collaborations such as Bin Chicken with Toronto Dance Theatre, The Magic Wallet, Mission Sankofa, and “Where Do I Go?” with Tapestry Opera
- commissioned work was shared at Suoni Per Il Popolo, sound art installation “My Ancestor Summons Me” at MOCA Toronto, Debaser Pique, the 21C Music Festival with the world premiere of her improvisational work “A Time to Exist” in Koerner Hall
- Wavelength Summer Thing opener for headliner horrorcore rapper Backxwash and featured on most recent album “His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering”
- co-composer with Benjamin Shapiro for Dora Award-winning Sex Dalmatian with Rock Bottom Movement

Special Skills and Training

Apart from my classical background, I am also an experimental multidisciplinary artist. My work ranges from music composition, film scoring, musical performances and improvisation, sound design, 3D digital art, virtual reality and artificial reality experiences. I have had the opportunity to perform and create in a variety of spaces from multiple genres and artistic styles which has allowed creative freedom to thrive. As someone who is also neurodivergent, expansive performance style, training, and personal experience is reflected in my teaching style as I'm able to adapt and accommodate student learning styles and interests leaving no student feeling left out or left behind.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
