I believe that music enhances brain development in many ways: hand-eye coordination, note identification, performance skills and an ear attuned to music. Students practice these skills while learning an instrument and use these skills in other areas of their lives. All of my lessons focus on the individual student and how they can be successful in every lesson.
Although learning a new instrument and the language of music can be tricky, I make sure every lesson includes a fun activity and time for the student to express themselves.
I started playing piano at the age of 5, my first teacher was my mother - an ARCT Teacher and Performance Certified instructor. I earned my own ARCT Performance diploma through the Royal Conservatory of Music right after graduating from high school. I competed in many music festivals during my music education, often winning first place. I have been teaching piano students since 2000, both in person and online. Many of my students competed in local festivals and completed RCM exams up to level eight. I enjoy teaching any age, but in 2016 I completed the training to be a Kindermusik Educator - teaching music to young children. Teaching a group of young children music and movement was exciting and fulfilling. However, I am most comfortable teaching classical piano: helping students identify notes, learn technique combined with practical theory.
As many musicians know, learning one instrument leads to learning about other musical avenues and skills. Although my formal training focused on piano, music theory and history, I also had the opportunity to participate in formal cello lessons. Having the basic skills that I learned through piano - note identification, dynamics, an understanding of music in general - I was able to pick up the cello quite quickly. I have also dabbled in guitar and the harmonica. Much of my youth was spent singing with a small group of peers. We even travelled to different communities to sing there as well as competed in music festivals. Music is a lifelong skill that often infiltrates every aspect of life.
