Teaching Philosophy

I started teaching music at the age of 15 with a passion for sharing its appreciation with others and helping students of all ages become adept in the musical arts. Music aided my endeavours to excel not only as an artist but as an academic throughout secondary and post-secondary. That is why I believe so strongly about music's importance. It truly enhances our mind to excel both in arts and in life.

I believe in every students' individuality. It's important, when teaching music, to entertain their individual interests. I want to make the spark inside of them burst into a vibrant flame! If you love jazz, let's learn to improv to the jazz legends! If you love Billie Eilish, let's learn the strumming pattern to one of her songs! If you love Disney, let's play a Lion King song on piano! And if you want to explore the complex world of classical music, let's prepare our skills to tackle some Beethoven! I want to learn your passions as much as I wish to share you mine!

Musical Education

I have twelve years of RCM music experience, studying privately and rigorously in classical and jazz piano, completing my Level 8 practical with Honours and Level 9 History and Theory with Honours with Distinction. All throughout those twelve years, I performed competitively at music festivals and competitions, winning a variety of gold and silver-level certificates.

I received a diploma from the Canadian College of Performing Arts in musical theatre performance so I would be able to teach students in the art of combining storytelling, acting, and dancing with music.

I've performed not only as a concert classical pianist but also as a jazz pianist in a jazz ensemble for five years, sang lead vocals in a rock band for two years, performed in choirs, and starred in professional musical theatre and film. I know the value of collaboration with other artists, exploring every facet of the arts and am enthusiastic to share my knowledge with my students.

Awards and Distinctions

W.E. Honey Memorial Award for Music - 2023
Derksen Mcclure Memorial Award for Music - 2024

Special Skills and Training

Along with teaching music, I also mentor in composition and songwriting. I started writing music at the age of 16. After completing my RCM level 9 Music History course, I became fascinated in the works of Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber and how they were able to take their classical music knowledge and combine it with the storytelling of theatre and the popular music of the time. I've written, arranged, and music directed for a variety of stage productions, even having one of my own musicals showcased at a Festival of New Works in 2024 to raving reviews! Knowing this art inside and out both as a performer and a composer has been an asset in inspiring my students to enjoy the world of music as much as I do.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
