Teaching Philosophy

Music has always been a vital part of how I express myself, and I believe it exists in everyone, whether we realize it or not. From the rhythm of our heartbeat to the tone of our voice, music is something we carry within us. My goal as a teacher is to help students uncover and nurture that natural creativity, no matter their age, ability, or background. My lessons center joy, appreciation, and curiosity. I want students to feel safe to experiment, make mistakes, and grow. I believe learning music shouldn’t be intimidating and should be empowering. Whether I’m working with beginners or advanced musicians, children or adults, I strive to create a space that supports exploration and expression.

Having taught in diverse settings, including programs for youth with special needs, I understand that every student brings a different story, pace, and set of strengths. I meet each student where they’re at, and guide them toward their goals, whether that’s playing their favorite song, producing their own music, or simply building confidence in their creative voice.

Musical Education

I hold a Minor in Music from Carleton University, where I built a strong foundation in theory, composition, and performance. I majored in the History and Theory of Architecture, where I focused on the intersection between sound and built space/environment, which continues to inform how I think about music. I’m a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who started with guitar at age 10, then expanded into piano, drums, and digital music production. I write and produce lo-fi/indie pop, with over 200,000 Spotify streams and coverage on radio and music blogs. I’ve also served as a music program director for youth in Maine, USA, and was awarded a microgrant to lead an 8-week digital audio workshop series for Canadian youth. I also have a Minor in Philosophy, which took part in helping inform the way that I approach music: with curiosity, depth, and a broader sense of artistic purpose.”

Awards and Distinctions

I received a micro-grant from the Philippine Center Canada and the Canada Service Corps to run an 8-week digital audio workshop series focused on music production and podcasting using Ableton Live 11.
As an independent artist releasing music , I’ve had over 200,000 streams on Spotify and have had features in music magazines and radio.
I also have experience teaching adapted music programs for persons with special needs.

Special Skills and Training

I grew up teaching myself music out of pure curiosity, what started with strumming a guitar at age 10 turned into hours of trial, error, and joy. I didn’t follow a traditional conservatory path; instead, I learned by ear, watching YouTube tutorials, reading books, taking online courses, experimenting with software, and performing wherever I could. That non-traditional start gave me a deeply intuitive sense of sound and a hands-on approach that still shapes how I teach and create. As I got older, I pursued a more formal understanding of music through university, earning a Minor in Music alongside my studies in Architecture and Philosophy. My academic training helped me deepen my grasp of music theory, composition, and music history, giving structure to what I had always felt instinctively. During this time, I also collaborated closely with other artists, professors, and teachers who challenged and inspired me to grow further as a musician and educator. I aim to equip my students with a skill set that’s both creatively fulfilling and technically versatile.

Policies

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
